Let \((X,G)\) be a continuous action of a topological group \(G\) on a compact Hausdorff space \(X\). The enveloping semigroup \(E(X,G)\) is the closure of the set of maps \(x\mapsto gx\) in the space \(X^X\) equipped with the product topology. For many simple actions \(E(X,G)\) is large (in particular, non-metrizable); work of Ellis, Nerurkar and the authors showed that many classes of actions do have metrizable enveloping semigroups. In this paper the condition that \(E(X,G)\) is metrizable is shown to be equivalent to several other equivalent properties of the action, in particular to a circle of properties shown to be equivalent by \textit{E. Glasner} and \textit{M. Megrelishvili} [Colloq. Math. 104, No. 2, 223--283 (2006; Zbl 1094.54020)].
