By a topological dynamical system is understood a pair \((X,G)\) where \(X\) is a compact Hausdorff space and \(G\) a topological group acting on \(X\). The closure in \(X^X\) of the set of all homeomorphisms \(x\to gx\) for \(x\in X\) and \(g\in G\) is the enveloping semigroup \(E(X,G)\) of \((X,G)\), where the set \(X^X\) is equipped with the pointwise convergence topology. The author gives a survey of recent results concerning close relations between the theories of enveloping semigroups, of chaotic behavior, and of representation of dynamical systems on Banach spaces.
