Let \(R\) be a Riemann surface. The \textit{Teichmüller space} \(T(R)\) can be defined as the set of equivalence classes of quasi-conformal mappings with domain \(R\), where \(f:R\to R_1\) and \(g:R\to R_2\) are considered to be equivalent if there is a map \(h:R_1\to R_2\) such that \(h\circ f\) is homotopic to \(g\) rel ideal boundary. The \textit{asymptotic Teichmüller space} of \(R\), \(AT(R)\), is defined in the same way, except that \(h\) is asked to be asymptotically conformal. In particular, there is a natural projection map \(T(R)\to AT(R)\). There are complex structures on \(T(R)\) and on \(AT(R)\) for which this map is holomorphic. If \(\Gamma\) is a Fuchsian group acting on the unit disc \(\mathbf{D}\) and uniformizing \(R\), then there is the famous \textit{Bers map} which embeds \(T(R)\) holomorphically into the Banach space \(B(\Gamma)\) of bounded holomorphic automorphic forms on \(\mathbf{D}^*=\hat{C}-\mathrm{cl}(\mathbf{D})\) of weight \(-4\) with respect to \(\Gamma\). In a parallel way, there is a canonical holomorphic embedding of \(AT(R)\), called the \textit{asymptotic Bers map}, which is induced from the Bers embedding and the canonical projection map \(T(R)\to AT(R)\). This asymptotic Bers map embeds \(AT(\Gamma)\) into a quotient Banach space \(\hat{B}(\Gamma)\) of \(B(\Gamma)\). In the paper under review, the author studies the image of the asymptotic Bers map and of its closure. The study concerns mainly the asymptotic Teichmüller space \(AT(\mathbf{D})\) of \(\mathbf{D}\). The author gives a geometric characterization for an element \(\phi\in B(\mathbf{1})\) (where \(\mathbf{1}\) is the trivial Fuchsian group) whose equivalence class \([\phi]\) is in the image of \(AT(\mathbf{D})\) under the asymptotic Bers map. The characterization is in terms of a property of developing maps and the Schwarzian derivatives of these maps. For a general group \(\Gamma\), the author gives a necessary condition for \([\phi]\in \hat{B}(\Gamma)\) to be in the image of the asymptotic Bers map. The author then gives a necessary condition on \(\phi\in B(\mathbf{1})\) such that its asymptotic class \([\phi]\) is contained in the closure of the image of the asymptotic Bers map. The author also discusses a density problem in the case of asymptotic Teichmüller spaces, giving a negative answer to a version of the Bers density problem for these spaces.
