Let \(S = K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]\) denote the polynomial ring in \(n\) variables over a field \(K.\) Let \(I \subset S\) denote a monomial ideal. A conjecture of \textit{R. P. Stanley} [Invent. Math. 68, 175--193 (1982; Zbl 0516.10009)], states that there is a presentation of \(S/I\) as a direct sum of \(K\)-linear spaces of the form \(u K[z],\) where \(u\) is a monomial and \(Z \subset \{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}\) a subset with \(|Z| \geq \text{depth} S/I.\) If this happens the ideal \(I\) is called a Stanley ideal. The conjecture was proved in the case of \(n = 4\) by \textit{J. Apel} [J. Algebr. Comb. 17, No. 1, 39--56 (2003; Zbl 1031.13003)]. In the mean time there is an active research about this subject. In the paper under review, a proof of Stanley's conjecture for \(n = 5\) is given. The proof requires the study of Stanley's Conjecture on multigraded \(S\)-modules. Moreover, for \(n = 5\) the author has shown that the so-called pretty clean ideals, see Herzog and the author [Manuscr. Math. 121, No. 3, 385--410 (2006; Zbl 1107.13017)], are exactly the sequentially Cohen-Macaulay ones. Besides of his main results the author proves several non-trivial technical results useful also in different applications. Related results to those of the author have been obtained by \textit{J. Herzog, A. S. Jahan} and \textit{S. Yassemi} [J. Algebr. Comb. 27, No. 1, 113--125 (2008; Zbl 1131.13020)].
