In the paper under review the author extends Ruy Exel's generalized version of the Fourier inversion theorem to locally compact nonabelian groups. In the process the author improves some of the results obtained by Ruy Exel for abelian groups. The author uses elegant tools of weight theory developed in the context of \(C^*\)-algebras to prove the main results of this paper, whereas Ruy Exel uses strong results like Naimark's theorem on the structure of positive definite maps and Stone's theorem on representations of locally compact abelian groups to establish his results. However the related papers of P. Sally and G. Warner, and R. Herb on the Fourier inversion theorem for real semisimple Lie groups do not find a place in the cited reference. It is worthwhile to include them. They are [\textit{R. Herb}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 249, 281--302 (1979; Zbl 0419.22015); Am. J. Math. 104, 9--58 (1982; Zbl 0499.43007); \textit{P. J. Sally jun.} and \textit{G. Warner}, Acta Math. 131, 1--26 (1973; Zbl 0305.43007)].
