The paper deals with the problem of uniqueness of optimal solution in choice-theoretic problems related to social choice, voting, two-person bargaining, and other optimization models. It is shown that the axiom of independence of irrelevant alternatives, and a continuity requirement, well characterize the single-peakedness of the choice function. Moreover, the rationalizability and representability of the choice functions with single peak are analyzed.
