    An \(L^2\) maximal multiplier result of Bourgain says: For every \(f \in L^2 ( \mathbb{R} )\) \[ \left \| \sup\limits_{k} \left| \int_{R_k} \hat{f} (\xi) e ^{2 \pi i \xi x} d \xi \right| \right \|_{L^2_x} ~ \lesssim (\log N)^2 \| f \|_2, \] when \(R_k\) is the collection of all intervals of length \(2^k\), centered at an element of \(\{\lambda_1, \ldots, \lambda_N\},\) and \(2^k < \min\limits_{i \neq j} | \lambda_i - \lambda_j |/100.\) The author extends this result to weighted maximal operators on \(L^p\). This is a first step to generalizing Bourgain's Return Times theorem to \(p < 2\). A part of the proof involves estimating the operator norm of a complicated square function using time-frequency techniques.
