The Mazur-Ulam theorem states that if \(A\) and \(B\) are real normed spaces and \(\phi: A \to B\) is a bijective isometry, then \(\phi\) is affine. In the paper under review, a nice generalization of this theorem is proved. The author shows that if \(A\) and \(B\) are unital Banach algebras and \(U\) and \(V\) are open multiplicative subgroups of \(A^{-1}\) and \(B^{-1}\) respectively, then every isometry \(T\) from \(U\) onto \(V\) extends to a real-linear isometry up to translation from \(A\) onto \(B\). Several corollaries are derived and some illustrative examples are provided. The properties of isometries between groups of invertible elements in commutative Banach algebras were investigated in \textit{O. Hatori} [Stud. Math. 194, No. 3, 293--304 (2009; Zbl 1190.46014)].
