A localization operator \(A_a^{\varphi_1,\varphi_2}\) with symbol \(a\) and windows \(\varphi_1,\varphi_2\) maps \[ f\mapsto \int (a V_{\varphi_1}f)(x,\omega) M_\omega T_x \varphi_2\,d(x,\omega). \] Here \(V\), \(T\), and \(M\) denote the short-time Fourier transformation (STFT), the translation and the modulation operator, respectively. If \(\varphi_1=\varphi_2\) is a Gaussian, then localization operators are anti-Wick pseudo-differential operators. Assuming that the windows belong to the modulation space \(M^1\), the authors study conditions for the boundedness of the STFT and of the localization operators between Lebesgue spaces and, more generally, between Wiener amalgam spaces \(W(L^p,L^q)\). For example, Theorem~4.1 states that \(A_a^{\varphi_1,\varphi_2}\) is a bounded operator on \(L^r\) if \(a\in L^q\) and \[ \tfrac 1 q \geq \big|\tfrac 1 r -\tfrac 1 2\big| \] hold. Conversely, it is shown that the preceding inequality is necessary for the continuity of operators with symbols in \(L^q\) and positive windows.
