The notion of a TERP structure, a generalization of variations of Hodge structures, appeared in the context of the theory of connections on Frobenius manifolds [\textit{C. Hertling}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 555, 77--161 (2003; Zbl 1040.53095)]; in the past decade C. Hertling with collaborators and followers developed the corresponding ideas similarly to the classical theory [\textit{W. Schmid}, Invent. Math. 22, 211--319 (1973; Zbl 0278.14003)], where the key role plays the concept of nilpotent orbits for Hodge structures and their relations with mixed Hodge structures; see, e.g., [\textit{C. Hertling} and \textit{C. Sevenheck}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 609, 23--80 (2007; Zbl 1136.32011); in: Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics 78, 49--73 (2008; Zbl 1151.14304)]. The biggest part of the paper under review is a detailed introduction to the theory and a brief survey of the author's earlier results together with further improvements and modifications, while the rest of the work deals with some applications of TERP structures. Thus, following his predecessors, the author first describes the notions and basic properties of integrable pure twistor structures, TERP structures and their variations, integrable twistor and twistor-TERP nilpotent orbits, the new supersymmetric index, a variation of a polarized mixed twistor structure and its reduction to that of split type. He also constructs a correspondence between twistor nilpotent orbits and polarized mixed twistor structures in the higher dimensional case, and shows that a twistor nilpotent orbit is approximated by twistor nilpotent orbits of split type [the author, Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 869 (2007; Zbl 1259.32005), ibid. 870 (2007; Zbl 1259.32006)]. The next portion of preliminary materials contains a review of Stokes structures, reductions for a family of meromorphic \(\lambda\)-flat bundles [the author, ``Wild harmonic bundles and wild pure twistor \(D\)-modules'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:0803.1344}], as well as a reduction of unramifiedly good wild harmonic bundles to tame harmonic bundles, and then to polarized mixed twistor structures. The chain of all these steps can be regarded as a reduction to the nilpotent orbits in the classical theory. In the two last sections, the author establishes an enrichment of the reductions by integrability and real structures, obtains some results concerning approximation of the new supersymmetric index of wild or tame variations of integrable twistor structures, analyzes the asymptotic behaviour of the index for variation of pure polarized TERP structures, and finally investigates a reduction of the HS-orbits, the nilpotent orbits in the sense of [Hertling and Sevenheck, loc. cit.]. In the acknowledgements, together with many thanks the author expresses his gratitude to Claus Hertling, especially for ``a surprisingly detailed and careful letter'', which helped to improve the paper and to correct some errors in its earlier versions.
