The authors studied the lifespan of solutions for the nonlinear wave equation \(\partial_t^2 u-\operatorname{div}(e^u \nabla u)=0\) with small Cauchy data \(u(0,x)=\epsilon u_0(x)\), \(\partial_t u(0,x)=\epsilon u_1(x)\) with \(x\in\mathbb R^3\). The lifespan \(T_\epsilon\) is proven to satisfy \(\lim_{\epsilon\rightarrow 0} \epsilon T_\epsilon =-{4}/{\min_\rho[u_0(\rho)+\rho u_0'(\rho)-\rho u_1(\rho)]}\), for radial initial data. The equation is reduced from the 3-D pressure-gradient system, which arises from the splitting of the three-dimensional compressible Euler system. For a more general system of the form \(\partial_t^2 u-f(u)\Delta u=a(u)(\partial_t u)^2+b(u)|\nabla u|^2\) with radial data, the almost global existence of solutions (in the space \(H^2\times H^1\) with low regularity) has been proven in [\textit{K. Hidano} et al., Adv. Differ. Equ. 17, No. 3--4, 267--306 (2012; Zbl 1269.35019)].
