Consider a topological space \(X\) and its fundamental groupoid \(\pi(X)\) equipped with the discrete topology. Moreover let \(R\) denote a unital commutative topological ring. The paper defines a \(K\)-theory for the category \(R \pi(X)\) whose morphisms are formal finite sums in \(\pi(X)\) with coefficients in \(R\). Given a homotopy invariant functor \(F\) from the category of spaces to the stable category of spectra, the assembly map is a certain natural transformation \(F^\% \rightarrow F\) between a certain homotopy-invariant excisive functor \(F^\%\) and \(F\). Let \(F\) be the functor which assigns to a topological space \(X\) the \(K\)-theory \(K(R \pi(X))\). Then it is analyzed what can be said about the assembly map in this situation. It also turns out that, given a discrete group \(G\), the analytical assembly map can be described in the form \(BG_+ \wedge K({\mathbb C}) \rightarrow K(C^*_{\max}(G))\) at the level of spectra.
