An isometry of an abelian group is a monomorphism that preserves heights. The isometries of a group are right-invariant if for all isometries \(\alpha,\beta\) there is an isometry \(\gamma\) such that \(\alpha\beta=\beta\gamma\). Thus automorphisms are right-invariant and the author addresses the problem of when the converse holds. He determines the divisible groups, reduced \(p\)-groups, torsion complete groups, algebraically compact groups and torsion-free completely decomposable groups for which the right-invariant isometries are automorphisms. Some care is required in reading this paper because the author (or translator) frequently omits quantifiers.
