Let \(K\) be a number field and \(\Gamma\) a subgroup of \(K^*\) (most frequently the group of \(S\)-units of \(K\)). Let \(a_1,\ldots,a_n\in K\) be given and consider the equation \(a_1x_1+\ldots a_nx_n=0\) in \(x_1,\ldots,x_n \in \Gamma\). This equation is called weighted \(S\)-unit equation and plays an important role in the theory and applications of Diophantine equations. Several types of Diophantine equations are equivalent to certain types of \(S\)-unit equations or can be reduced to such equations. Therefore the study of these equations has an extensive literature. The authors study a question posed by \textit{M. Jarden} and \textit{W. Narkiewicz} [Monatsh. Math. 150, No. 4, 327--332 (2007; Zbl 1121.12002)]: Obtain an asymptotic formula for the number \(N_n(x)\) of positive integers \(m \leq x\) which are sums of at most \(n\) units of the ring of integers of \(K\). Variants of this problem were answered formerly by several authors, e.g. [\textit{A. Filipin} et al., Acta Arith. 133, No. 4, 297--308 (2008; Zbl 1229.11128), Arch. Math. 93, No. 3, 259-268 (2009; Zbl 1250.11090)]. Extending all these results the authors give an asymptotic formula as \(q\to\infty\) for the number of equivalence classes of \(S\)-integers of norm \(\leq q\) of \(K\) that can be represented as the sum (without vanishing subsums) of \(n\) pieces of \(S\) integers of norm \(\leq m\).
