Let \(\tau: B\to C\) be a linear map between \(C^*\)-algebras. A map \(T:E \to F\) from a Hilbert \(B\)-module \(E\) to a Hilbert \(C\)-module \(F\) such that \(\langle T(x),T(y)\rangle=\tau(\langle x,y\rangle)\) is called a \(\tau\)-map. The main aim of this paper is to investigate the general structure of \(\tau\)-maps. The authors give an intrinsic characterization that generalizes the characterization by \textit{G. Abbaspour Tabadkan} and \textit{M. Skeide} [``Generators of dynamical systems on Hilbert modules'', Commun. Stoch. Anal. 1, 193--207 (2007)] of homomorphically extendable maps as those which are ternary homomorphisms. For general strictly CP-extendable maps they give a factorization theorem that generalizes those of \textit{M.B. Asadi} [J. Oper. Theory 62, No. 2, 235--238 (2009; Zbl 1199.46128)], of \textit{B. V. Rajarama Bhat} et al. [J. Oper. Theory 68, No. 1, 173--178 (2012; Zbl 1265.46091)], and of \textit{M. Skeide} [J. Oper. Theory 68, No. 2, 543--547 (2012; Zbl 1274.46114)]. This theorem may be regarded as a unification of the representation theory of the algebra of adjointable operators and the KSGNS-construction. They also establish a connection with dilations of CP-semigroups and product systems.
