This paper studies two numerical invariants associated to a primitive ideal in the universal enveloping algebra of a semi-simple complex Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\). The first one is the classical Goldie rank while the second one is the dimension of a certain irreducible module over an appropriate finite \(W\)-algebra. Modulo a conjecture which asserts that the \(W\)-algebra has a one-dimensional module with some special properties (which is verified in all classical types), it is shown that the two numerical invariants described above are equal. Modulo the same conjecture, the paper gives a formula for Goldie ranks of the algebras of locally ad-finite endomorphisms of simple highest weight \(\mathfrak g\)-modules. Additionally, a Kazhdan-Lusztig type formula for characters of simple modules in the category \(\mathcal O\) for a finite \(W\)-algebra is obtained. The latter is based on a generalization of Soergel's combinatorial functor and the abstract machinery developed in the paper gives an interesting application to the study of quantum groups. Namely, it is shown that a certain quotient of Lusztig's form of a quantum group at a root of unity is a Dixmier algebra.
