Let \(R\) be a prime ring with \(\text{char\,}R\neq 2\), \(3\), \(L\) a noncentral Lie ideal of \(R\) and \(\sigma\in\Aut(R)\). For an additive \(d\colon R\to R\), \((d,\sigma)\) is a skew derivation of \(R\) if for all \(x,y\in R\), \(d(xy)=d(x)y+\sigma(x)d(y)\). The main result of the authors is that if for a skew derivation \((d,\sigma)\) of \(R\) and a fixed positive integer \(n\), \((d(x)x-xd(x))^n=0\) for all \(x\in L\), then \(R\) embeds in \(M_2(F)\) for \(F\) a field. The authors state as a consequence that the same result holds when \(d\) is a nonidentity automorphism of \(R\).
