A Banach space has the local diameter 2 property (LD2P) (respectively, strong diameter 2 property (SD2P)) if every slice (respectively, convex combination of slices) of its unit ball has diameter 2. Also, a Banach space \(X\) has the local diameter 2 property+ (LD2P+) if for every \(\varepsilon>0\), every slice \(S\) of \(B_X\), and every norm-one \(x\in S\), there exists a \(y\in S\) such that \(\|x-y\|>2-\varepsilon\). It is clear that SD2P \(\Rightarrow\) LD2P and LD2P+ \(\Rightarrow\) LD2P. One of the main results says that the bidual of a Banach space with the SD2P is neither strictly convex nor smooth. Also, the authors present equivalent characterizations of the LD2P+, which in turn allows them to prove that the bidual of a Banach space with the LD2P+ fails to be smooth. It remains an open question whether the LD2P of a Banach space implies that its bidual fails to be strictly convex or smooth.
