It is well known that abelian varieties cannot preserve group structure, properness and smootness at the same time under degeneration. In order to make this possible, log abelian varieties were introduced by \textit{T. Kajiwara} et al. [J. Math. Sci., Tokyo 15, No. 1, 69--193 (2008; Zbl 1156.14038)]. They are defined as certain sheaves in the étale topology. The paper under review generalizes this definition to analogous sheaves in the log flat topology. The more general topology is needed to study some problems like finite group subobjects, \(\ell\)-adic representations, logarithmic Dieudonné theory etc. If the base is a log-point, a log abelian variety is automatically a log abelian variety with constant degeneration. Moreover, for log abelian varieties the dual short exact sequence, and Poincaré's complete reducibility theorem are proved.
