A pair \((E,\phi)\) formed by a vector bundle \(E\) on a smooth variety \(X\) and a morphism \(\phi\colon E \rightarrow E \otimes T_X\) satisfying \(\phi \wedge \phi=0\) is called a co-Higgs bundle and \(\phi\) is called a co-Higgs field. Making clever use of the Hartshorne-Serre correspondence, the authors obtain existence of nilpotent co-Higgs structures on both strictly semistable indecomposable bundles and stable bundles on \(\mathbb P^3\) for any positive value of \(c_2\). Furthermore, they show that the Chern numbers of any nonsplit strictly semistable rank 2 bundle on \(\mathbb P^3\) with a nilpotent co-Higgs structure satisfy \(4c_2-c_1>32\).
