In the search for the \emph{best} Kähler metric on a Kähler manifold, \textit{S. K. Donaldson} defined, in his seminal paper [J. Differ. Geom. 62, No. 2, 289--349 (2002; Zbl 1074.53059)], a condition of \emph{stability} on a polarized algebraic variety. This conditon was conjectured to be equivalent to the existence of cscK (i.e., constant scalar curvature Kähler) metrics. An important ingredient of the aforementioned paper was a description of invariant Kähler metrics in terms of convex functions on the moment polytope of a toric variety, relying on previous results of \textit{V. Guillemin} [J. Differ. Geom. 40, No. 2, 285--309 (1994; Zbl 0813.53042)] and \textit{M. Abreu} [Int. J. Math. 9, No. 6, 641--651 (1998; Zbl 0932.53043)]. The conjecture was later confirmed by \textit{S. K. Donaldson} for toric surfaces [Geom. Funct. Anal. 19, No. 1, 83--136 (2009; Zbl 1177.53067)]. In [Adv. Lect. Math. (ALM) 7, 29--75 (2008; Zbl 1161.53066)], \textit{S. K. Donaldson} proposed to study the existence of cscK metrics on toric fibrations. \textit{B. Chen} et al. addressed the question of the existence of Kähler metrics of \emph{prescribed} scalar curvature on toric surfaces. In the papers [Adv. Math. 340, 459--527 (2018; Zbl 1409.53059); Adv. Math. 340, 363--405 (2018; Zbl 1411.53054)] they proved their existence under some uniform stability condition. Underlying both problems is the so-called \emph{generalized Abreu equation}, a fourth-order PDE. In the paper under review the authors tackle the problem of existence of metrics with prescribed scalar curvature on homogeneous toric bundles \(G\times_K M\), where \(G/K\) is a generalized flag manifold and \(M\) is a compact toric surface. Their main result, Theorem 1.1, is that the existence of a Kähler metric with prescribed scalar curvature on a homogeneous toric bundle is guaranteed by the above mentioned uniform stability condition, together with some conditions involving the Duistermaat-Heckman polynomial.
