Consider a toric manifold \((M,\omega)\), with \([\omega]\) a Kähler class on \(M\), and the corresponding Delzant polytope \(\Delta\). It is assumed that the class \([\omega]\) admits an extremal Kähler metric solving Abreu's equation \[ \sum \frac{\partial^2 u^{ij}}{\partial x_i \partial x_j}=-A \] if and only if \((\Delta, A)\) is uniformly K-stable (this is a variant of the famous Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture). Here \(A\) is an affine linear function, but one can a consider more general setting. The notion of uniform K-stability, stronger than the classical notion of K-stability, was introduced by S. K. Donaldson. It implies the existence of weak solutions. The main theorem of the paper shows that the existence of a solution to Abreu's equation implies uniform K-stability (and relative strong K-stability). The authors also show that the properness of the Mabuchi functional is a necessary condition for existence of extremal metrics on toric manifolds.
