After recalling the notion of \(K\)-polystability, introduced by the second author earlier as a modification of the notion of \(K\)-polystability of Donaldson, the authors prove the following Theorem. If \(g\) compact Kähler manifold \(M\) admits an extremal metric in \(C_1(L)\), where \(L\) is an ample line bundle, then \((M,L)\) is \(K\)-polystable relative to a maximal torus of automorphisms of \((M,L)\). Recall that an extremal metric is a Kähler metric whose scalar curvature has holomorphic gradient vector field. Special cases are: metrics of constant scalar curvature and Kähler-Einstein metrics.
