The author investigates some aspects of Chow stability and extremal metrics. This was motivated by conjectures of Yau, Tian and Donaldson that the existence of extremal metrics on a polarized manifold \((M,L)\) is equivalent to the stability of the latter. Also it follows from results of Donaldson that the existence of constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metrics is equivalent to the Chow stability of \((M,L^k)\); consequently, the existence of cscK metrics implies asymptotical Chow stability of \((M,L)\) under some discreteness assumption. In this context, the author previously introduced the notion of relative stability and obtains, from his main result (Theorem 1.1), the following: Corollary 1.2. Let \((M,L)\) be a polarized manifold. If there exists an extremal Kähler metric \(\varpi_\infty\) in the class \(2\pi c_1(L)\), then one can find some \(r\in Z^+\) such that \((M,L^{rk})\) is relatively Chow stable for \(k\gg 0\). In Section 2, basic definitions of balanced and relatively balanced metrics are given. Sections 3 to 6 provide tools to prove the main result of this paper (Theorem 1.1). Some applications of Theorem 1.1 are discussed in Section 7. Also extensive references are provided.
