The fifth moment of modular \(L\)-functions (Q2659435): Difference between revisions

The main theorem of this paper is that, as \(q\rightarrow\infty\) among primes, \[ \sum_{f\in H_{\kappa}(q)} L_f(1/2)^5\ll q^{1+\theta+\varepsilon}, \ \ \kappa\in\{4,6,8,10,14\}, \] where \(H_{\kappa}(q)\) is the set of weight \(\kappa\) Hecke eigenforms on \(\Gamma_0(q)\), \(L_f(s)\) is the \(L\)-function of \(f\in H_{\kappa}(q)\), and, using the phrasing from Theorem 1.1, \(\theta\) is ``the best-known progress towards the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture''. At the time of writing, \(\theta\) may be taken to be \(7/64\). As a Corollary it is deduced that \(L_f(1/2)\ll_{\varepsilon}q^{(1+\theta)/5+\varepsilon}\), which improves the previously best-known subconvexity result for \(L_f(1/2)\) (due to \textit{O. Balkanova} and \textit{D. Frolenkov} [J. Number Theory 173, 293--303 (2017; Zbl 1420.11087)]). Furthermore, assuming that \(\theta=0\) yields a subconvexity bound improving on that established by \textit{V. Blomer} and \textit{R. Khan} [Duke Math. J. 168, No. 6, 1109--1177 (2019; Zbl 1452.11110)] (on the other hand, taking \(\theta=7/64\) produces a weaker bound).
