Let \(X\) be a topological space of cardinality of the continuum (\(|X|=\mathfrak c\)). An \(f\colon X\to\mathbb R\) is said to be a (strong) Sier\-piń\-ski-Zyg\-mund function if for every \(A\subset X\) with \(|A|=\mathfrak c\), the restriction \(f\restriction A\) is discontinuous (is not Borel, respectively), in the sense of the topology inherited from \(X\). The name derives from a reknown construction, due to \textit{W. Sierpiński} and \textit{A. Zygmund}, of a function \(\mathbb R\to\mathbb R\) with this property [Fundam. Math. 4, 316--318 (1923; JFM 49.0179.02)]. With the notion of a (strong) Sier\-piń\-ski-Zyg\-mund function the author defines Sier\-piń\-ski-Zyg\-mund {\em spaces} as those topological spaces~\(X\), \(|X|=\mathfrak c\), which allow at least one (strong) Sier\-piń\-ski-Zyg\-mund function \(X\to\mathbb R\). Various properties and examples of (strong) Sier\-piń\-ski-Zyg\-mund spaces are discussed, also in connection with some axioms of set theory.
