Let \(J\) be a symmetric Jacobi matrix, so that \(Jp=xp\) with \(p=(p_0, p_1, \dots)^T\) is the three term recurrence equation for orthogonal polynomials \(p_n(x)\), and \(\mu(x)\) the corresponding spectral measure of \(J\), i.e. the measure of orthogonality for the sequence \(\{p_n\}\). For an arbitrary integer \(p\geq 1\), there is shown the equivalence between the Freud transformation \(d\mu(x,t)= \exp (-x^pt)d \mu(x)/ \int\exp (-x^pt) d\mu(x)\) of the measure, and a transformation of the entries of \(J\) by means of Toda type differential equations, cf. \textit{M. Toda}, Waves in nonlinear lattice. Prog. Theor. Phys. Suppl. 45, 174-200 (1970)]. Also, the dynamics of Hankel determinants and the corresponding minors appearing in this connection are studied.
