In this paper the authors study the limit as \(h\to 0\) of the (non- relativistic) quantum partition function associated with the Hamiltonian for motion in a Yang-Mills field. Let \(P\to M\) be a principal G-bundle where M is a compact Riemannian manifold and G is a compact connected Lie group, with \({\mathfrak g}\) its Lie algebra. Consider a gauge field defined by a connection on P. If \(\pi\) is a representation of G on a vector space V then a covariant derivative \(\nabla^{\pi}\) is associated with the given gauge field. If the local coordinate expression of the connection 1-form \(\theta\) is \(\theta =\sum A_ j(x)dx_ j\) where \(A_ j\) are \({\mathfrak g}-valued\) functions, then \(\nabla^{\pi}_ j=\partial_ j+\pi(A_ j(x))\). The quantum mechanical Hamiltonian considered by the authors has the expression \[ H_{h,\pi}=-ggf(h/2\pi)^ 2g^{- 1/2}\nabla_ j^{\pi}g^{jk}g^{1/2}\nabla_ k^{\pi}- iggf(h/2\pi)\pi(A_ 0(x))+V(x) \] where \(A_ 0\) is a smooth section of \(Px_{Ad}{\mathfrak g},V(x)\) is a smooth, real valued function on M and \((g_{ij})\) is the Riemannian metric on M. The authors obtain a complete asymptotic expansion as \(h\to 0\) of the trace of \(\exp(-tH_{h,\pi})\) with fixed t. However the representation \(\pi\) changes as \(h\to 0\). If \(\pi_ 1\) is a vector representation of G corresponding to some \(\lambda_ 1\) in a Weyl chamber then \(\pi_ n\) is the representation corresponding to \(n\lambda_ 1\). If \(H_ n=H_ h,\pi_ n,h=1/n\) the main result is Theorem A: Let \(d_ n\) be the dimension of the representation space of \(\pi_ n\). Fix \(t>0\). Then, there is a complete asymptotic expansion as \(h\to 0\) of the form: \[ d_ n^{-1}\quad trace\quad e^{-tH}n\sim ggf(h/2\pi)^{-\nu}(a_ 0(t)+a_ 1(t)ggf(h/2\pi)+a_ 2(t)ggf(h/2\pi)^ 2+...) \] where \(\nu =\dim M\) and \(a_ 0(t)\) is given (up to a factor \(\| \lambda_ 1\|^{\nu})\) by a specific integral formula.
