Consider the planar polynomial system \[ \frac{{dx}}{{dt}} = y, \quad \frac{{dy}}{{dt}} = -g(x) -f(y)y \tag{1} \] with \[ g(x) = \sum_{i=0}^{m-1}a_i x^i \pm x^m, \quad f(y) = \sum_{i=0}^{n-1}b_i x^i +y^n, \] where \( a_i\) and \(b_i\) are real numbers, \(m\) and \(n\) are natural numbers. \\In the first part of the paper, the authors classify the phase portraits of system (1) near infinity in the cases \[ (a)\; m>n+1, n=1; (b)\; m>n+1, n>1; (c) \; m=n+1; (d)\; m<n+1. \] For this purpose they use the Poincarè compactification. In this procedure a new treatment is provided for blowing up a degenerate equilibrium based on a continued fraction of a rational number. The authors also present sufficient and necessary conditions for an equilibrium of system (1) to be a center and characterize the corresponding global phase portrait.
