The author gives a unified approach to the simple modules of character height at most one for the restricted Jacobson-Witt algebras \(W(n,\mathbf{1})\) over an algebraically closed field \(F\) of characteristic \(p\geq 5\). As in the restricted case (i.e., character height \(-1\)) due to \textit{G. Shen} [Chin. Ann. Math., Ser. B 9, No. 4, 404-417 (1988; Zbl 0689.17011)], the construction of most of the simple \(W(n,\mathbf{1})\)-modules is reduced to the construction of simple modules for the general linear Lie algebra \({\mathfrak {gl}}(n,F)\). Note that the three cases considered by the author can be treated similarly since \(\text{ht}(\chi)\leq 1\) if and only if the positively graded subalgebra of \(W(n,\mathbf{1})\) acts trivially on every simple \(W(n,\mathbf{1})\)-module with character \(\chi\). The main results are as follows. There are \(p^n-1\) isomorphism classes of simple \(W(n,\mathbf{1})\)-modules with character height 0. The ones not induced from a maximal subalgebra of \(W(n,\mathbf{1})\) containing a copy of \({\mathfrak {gl}}(n,F)\) are realized explicitly as certain factor modules of a non-restricted (exact) deRham complex, and a formula for their dimension is given. Every simple \(W(n,\mathbf{1})\)-module with character height 1 is induced, and the number of isomorphism classes of simple \(W(n,\mathbf{1})\)-modules with character height 1 coincides with the number of isomorphism classes of the corresponding simple \({\mathfrak {gl}}(n,F)\)-modules. All this is a nice generalization of \textit{H.-J. Chang}'s results for the Witt algebra \(W(1,\mathbf{1})\) [Abh. Math. Semin. Univ. Hamb. 14, 151-184 (1941; Zbl 0025.24202)].
