Let \(X\) be a compact Hausdorff space and denote by \(C(X)\) the space of all complex-valued continuous functions on \(X\). The authors present results concerning the algebraic reflexivity of certain subsets of the isometry group of the Banach space \(C(X)\). A collection \(\mathcal B\) of bounded linear transformations on a given Banach space \(E\) is called algebraically reflexive if any bounded linear transformation \(T\) on \(E\) which pointwise equals a member of \(\mathcal B\) (that member may vary from point to point) implies that \(T\) belongs to \(\mathcal B\). A linear projection \(P\) on the complex Banach space \(E\) is called a generalized bi-circular projection if for some complex number \(\lambda \neq 1\) of modulus 1, the operator \(P+\lambda (I-P)\) is an isometry. Transformations of this kind have been rather extensively studied recently. It is proved in the present paper that, for any compact Hausdorff space \(X\), if the isometry group of \(C(X)\) is algebraically reflexive, then so are the sets of all involuting isometries and generalized bi-circular projections. Results for spaces of vector-valued functions are also presented.
