The authors consider a class of functional differential equations of the form \[ \frac{d}{dt}\;x(t)=-Ax(t)+L(x_t)+f(t) \;\;\text{for}\;\;t\geq \sigma \] \[ x_{\sigma}=\varphi\in \text{B}, \] where \(-A\) is the infinitesimal generator of an analytic semigroup \(\{T(t)\}_{t\geq 0}\) on a Banach space \(X\) and the phase space \(\text{B}\) is a Banach space of functions from \((-\infty,0]\) introduced axiomatically, and let \[ \text{B}_{\alpha}=\{\varphi\in \text{B}; \;\varphi(\theta)\in D(A^{\alpha}), \;\text{for} \;\theta\geq 0 \;\text{and} \;A^{\alpha}\varphi\in \text{B}\}. \] Rewriting the initial equation as a Cauchy problem in \(\text{B}_{\alpha}\), they prove that, if the delayed part is continuous with respect to the \(\alpha\)-fractional power of \(A\), then the variation constants formula below holds true: \[ u_t(\cdot,\sigma,\varphi,f)=\text{U}(t-\sigma)\varphi+\lim_{n\to+\infty}\int_{\sigma}^t\text{U}(t-s)\Lambda^nf(s)\,ds \quad\text{for}\;\;t\geq \sigma \] uniformly for \(t\geq \sigma \) such that \(t-\sigma\) is bounded, where \(\text{U}(t)=u_t(\cdot,\sigma,\varphi,f)\) is the unique mild solution of the functional differential equation above corresponding to \(f\equiv 0\), and \(\Lambda^n\) is defined by means of the resolvent operators of \(A\). Then, they obtain a reduction principle and prove that the dynamics of the functional differential equation is governed by an ordinary differential equation in a finite dimensional Banach space. Some applications to the existence of periodic solutions and almost automorphic solutions are also included.
