    Let \(\Sigma_ g\) be a closed orientable surface of genus g and \(M_ g=\pi_ 0 Diff_+ \Sigma_ g\) be its mapping class group. Also let \(M_{g,*}\) and \(M_{g,1}\) be the mapping class groups of \(\Sigma_ g\) relative to the base point \(*\in \Sigma_ g\) and an embedded disc \(D^ 2\subset \Sigma_ g\). In a fundamental paper [Invent. Math. 72, 221-239 (1983; Zbl 0533.57003) \textit{J. Harer} computed the second homology group (with integer coefficients) of these mapping class groups. In the present note results are announced on the homology of these groups with coefficients in the first homology group \(H_ 1(\Sigma_ g, {\mathbb{Z}})\) on which the mapping class groups act naturally, especially \(H_ 1(M_ g; H_ 1(\Sigma_ g, {\mathbb{Z}}))\cong {\mathbb{Z}}/2g-2\), \(g\geq 2\); \(H_ 2(M; H_ 1(\Sigma_ g, {\mathbb{Z}}))=0\), \(g\geq 12\), where \(M=M_ g\), \(M_{g,*}\) or \(M_{g,1}\); \(H^ 2(M_ g; H^ 1(\Sigma_ g, {\mathbb{Z}}))\cong {\mathbb{Z}}/2g-2\), \(g\geq 9\).
