A hypersurface in the sphere with \(m\) constant principal curvatures is called an isoparametric hypersurface. If \(m=4\) then it is known by the work of Münzner that the principal curvatures arise in pairs of equal multiplicities \(m_1=m_2\) and \(m_3=m_4\), and their cross ratio equals \(-1\). The authors show that these properties characterize isoparametric hypersurfaces among Dupin hypersurfaces (each principal curvature constant along its curvature surface) with 4 distinct principal curvatures modulo Lie sphere transformations.
