The authors are concerned with interval division paying attention to the quality of the partition. They derive a functional equation for the distribution function of the length of the maximal gap, show how to solve it in sections and how to use the sectional solutions to provide successively improved approximations of the average maximal gap. Finally, it is shown that, suitably scaled, a certain type of cumulative weights follows asymptotically Dickman's infinitely divisible distribution.
