This is a review paper on the development and state-of-the-art of multibody dynamics. The author identifies the roots of multibody dynamics in classical mechanics theories. The state-of-the-art is discussed in terms of recent writings on the subject. Projected future developments and research areas are also outlined. These include: 1) standardization of data; 2) coupling with CAD systems; 3) parameter identification; 4) real-time animation; 5) contact and impact problems; 6) extension to control and mechatronic systems; 7) optimal system design; 8) strength analysis; and 9) interaction with fluids. In addition, the need for improved numerical methods and for software development is cited. The paper represents an extensive literature review by the author. It contains 197 references. The paper should be of interest and use to students, practitioners, and researchers concerned with multibody systems.
