This book consists of 12 chapters with the following headings: 1. Factorization of operator-valued transfer functions; 2. Operator identities and S-nodes; 3. Continual factorization; 4. Spectral problems on the half-line; 5. Spectral problems on the line; 6. Weyl-Titchmarsh functions of periodic canonical systems; 7. Division of canonical systems into subclasses; 8. Uniqueness theorems; 9. Weyl discs and points; 10. A class of canonical systems; 11. Classical spectral problems; 12. Nonlinear integral equations and the method of the inverse spectral problem. At the end, the author adds a brief list of comments (open problems, conjectures, bibliographical remarks etc.), a list of references, and a short subject index. It is the author's merit to collect here lots of special results, which are in large part due to himself and have been scattered so far over many journals, for the first time in book form, making them accessible this way to a larger readership. This monograph will be certainly of interest to specialists in functional analysis and operator theory, with a particular emphasis on direct and inverse spectral problems for differential operators.
