A Kirkman triple system of order \(v\) consists of a \(v\)-set \(V\), a set \(B\) of 3-subsets of \(V\) in which every 2-subset of \(V\) is contained in precisely one \(b\in B\), and a partition of \(B\) into classes \(B_ 1,\ldots,B_{(v-1)/2}\) for which each \(v\in V\) occurs in exactly one \(b\in B_ i\) for each \(1\leq i\leq(v-1)/2\). This paper is an authoritative survey on Kirkman triple systems and some generalizations.
