The number of limit cycles is studied for discontinuous piecewise differential systems formed by quadratic or cubic polynomial systems separated by a straight line. Perturbations of a linear center are considered and limit cycles bifurcating from periodic orbits are found via averaging theory. The main results of the paper gives, for every \(n=1,2,3,4,5\) an upper bound on the number of limit cycles that can be obtained using averaging theory of order \(n\). Moreover a necessary and sufficient condition is given for the existence of a center or focus at infinity, under some restriction on the system.
