Let \(R\) be a noetherian ring of prime characteristic \(p > 0\). The perfect closure \(R^\infty\) of \(R\) is defined to be the limit of the direct system \[ R\to R\to R \to \ldots, \] where all the maps are the Frobenius morphism \(F:R \to R\). Alternatively, one can think of \(R^\infty\) as an overring of \(R_{\text{red}}\) obtained by adjoining all the \(p\)-power roots of elements of \(R_{\text{red}}\). (The ring \(R^\infty\) is very rarely noetherian.) The ring \(R\) is said to be \(F\)-coherent if \(R^\infty\) is coherent in the classical sense, that is, all the finitely generated ideals of \(R^\infty\) have a finite presentation. In this paper the author discusses the relationship between \(F\)-coherent rings and other classes of rings related to tight closure theory (\(F\)-pure, \(F\)-regular, \(F\)-injective rings). The author also addresses the problem of finding conditions under which every system of parameters on \(R\) becomes a regular sequence on \(R^\infty\).
