Let \(f:M^n\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^2\) be a stable map of a smooth closed and connected manifold, \(n\geq 2\), and let \(S_f\) be the singular set of \(f\). The pair \(\mathcal{P}=(f(M),f(S_f))\), up to diffeomorphisms of \(\mathbb{R}^2\), is called the planar portrait of \(M\) through \(f\). In this interesting article the author presents a semi-local study for a basic piece of \(\mathcal{P}\) called the cusp fan, by studying fibering structures over it and by giving a geometric characterization. Various examples of stable maps and planar portraits of closed manifolds are given. Also, two infiniteness properties of planar portraits are illustrated by using these examples. Another paper by the author connected to this topic is [Tokyo J. Math. 15, No. 2, 327--349 (1992; Zbl 0790.57018)].
