Let \(X\) be a smooth projective curve of genus \(g\) over an algebraically clased field \(k\). The author constructs vector bundles \(R^{\text{rk}}_{\mu}\) which are characterized by the following property: For all coherent sheaves \(E\) of slope \(\mu\) and rank \(\text{rk}\) on \(X\), semistability of \(E\) is equivalent to vanishing of \(\Hom (R^{\text{rk}}_{\mu}, E)\). This extends results of \textit{M. Raynaud} [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 110, 103--125 (1982; Zbl 0505.14011)] and \textit{G. Hein} [Math. Z. 257, No. 3, 597--611 (2007; Zbl 1126.14043)]. Also some other criteria for slope-stability of a coherent sheaf \(E\) are given. Let \(U_X(r,r(g-1))\) be a moduli space of rank \(r\) bundles of degree \(r(g-1).\) The property of \(E\) to be a base point of \(|R \Theta|\) in \(U_X(r, r(g-1))\) for a positive integer \(R\) is also effectively described.
