Two partial orders on the same set are said to be perpendicular if they have no common order-preserving maps except the identity and constants. The authors show an order is perpendicular to any complementary order if it has no autonomous subset; complementary orders exist when the dimension is at most two. They also construct large classes of bipartite perpendicular orders.
