The authors study the following systems \[ \begin{aligned} \eta _t + u_x + (u\eta )_x + au_{xxx} - b\eta _{xxt} &= 0,\\ u_t + \eta _x + uu_x + c\eta _{xxx} - du_{xxt} &= 0, \end{aligned} \] where \(a,\,b,\,c,\,d\) are dispersive constants which satisfy the physical relevant constrains: \(a + b + c + d = \frac{1}{3}\) and \(c + d = \frac{1}{2}(1 - \vartheta ^2) \geq 0.\) This class of systems contains some of the well-known systems, such as the classical Boussinesq system \((a = b = c = 0,\,d = \frac{1}{3})\) and the Bona-Smith system \((a = 0,\,b = d > 0,\,c < 0).\) It is known that a physical relevant is linearly well posed and locally nonlinearly well posed in certain natural Sobolev spaces if the constants \(a,\,b,\,c,\,d\) satisfy the conditions \[ b \geq 0,\;d \geq 0,\;a \leq 0,\;c \leq 0, \quad\text{or}\quad b \geq 0,\;d \geq 0,\;a = c > 0. \] In this article the coefficients satisfy these conditions. The authors analyze the effect of dissipation on systems and study the decay rates of solutions \((\eta ,u)\) toward zero. Two kinds of dissipations are considered: (i) Complete dissipation: replacing the \(\binom 00\) in the right-hand side of systems by the vector \(\binom{\eta _{xx}}{u_{xx}}\); (ii) Partial dissipation: replacing the \({\binom 0 0}\) in the right-hand side of systems by the vector \(\binom{0}{u_{xx}}\).
