    This paper is devoted to investigating some invariants of infinite, locally finite graphs. The invariants considered are classified as analytic (such as spectra of several kinds of matrices associated with a graph, amenability, or the so-called Kazhdan property), or combinatorial (such as the isoperimetric number, growth, the structure of the end space, etc.) It is shown that each of the above has its ``essential'' counterpart, which is a similar quantity but with the property that it does not change under adding or deleting finitely many edges; these ``essential'' invariants describe global behaviour of graphs. The paper not only is a good introduction to and survey of the field, but contains new results as well. It also emphasizes a close relationship of the concepts studied to some other branches of mathematics, such as differential geometry, representation theory, stochastic processes, etc.
