    The author introduces mixed Morrey spaces and studies boundedness properties of iterated maximal operators in this context. More precisely if \(\vec q =(q_1,\ldots,q_n)\in(0,\infty]^n\) and \(p\in (0,\infty]\) satisfy \(\sum_{j=1} ^n 1/q_j\geq n/p\) then the mixed Morrey space \(\mathcal M_{\vec q} ^p(\mathbb R^n)\) is the space of measurable functions \(f\) such that \[ \|f\|_{\mathcal M_{\vec q} ^p(\mathbb R^n)}:=\sup_Q |Q|^{\frac1p-\frac1n\big(\sum_{j=1} ^n \frac{1}{q_j}\big)} \|f\chi_Q\|_{\vec q}<\infty. \] In the definition above the supremum is taken over all cubes in \(\mathbb R^n\) with sides parallel to the coordinate axes and \(\|g\|_{\vec q}\) denotes the mixed \(L^{\vec q}\)-norm of a function \(g\), for example in \(\mathbb R^2\) \[ \|g\|_{L^{\vec q}(\mathbb R^2)}:= \bigg(\int_{\mathbb R} \Big(\int_{\mathbb R} |g(x_1,x_2)|^{p_1}dx_1\Big)^\frac{p_2}{p_1}dx_2\bigg)^{\frac{1}{p_2}}. \] For \(1\leq k \leq n\) let \(M_k\) denote the one-dimensional Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, acting on the \(k\)-th variable on functions in \(\mathbb R^n\). Then an iterated maximal function can be defined as \[ \mathcal M_t f(x):= \Big(M_n \cdots M_1 [|f|^t](x)\Big)^{\frac1t},\qquad x\in \mathbb R^n. \] It is known from [\textit{B. Stöckert}, Math. Nachr. 86, 19--32 (1978; Zbl 0412.46021)] that \(\mathcal M_t\) is bounded on mixed Lebesque spaces \(L^{\vec p}(\mathbb R^n)\) for all \(\vec p=(p_1,\ldots,p_n)\) with \(0<t<\min_i p_i\). One of the main results of the paper under review is the corresponding boundedness property of \(\mathcal M_t\) on mixed Morrey spaces \[ \|\mathcal M_t f \|_{M_{\vec q} ^p(\mathbb R^n) }\lesssim \| f \|_{M_{\vec q} ^p(\mathbb R^n) }, \] whenever \(\vec q\) with positive and finite entries and \(p\in (0,\infty)\) satisfy \[ \frac{n}{p}\leq \sum_{j=1} ^n\frac{1}{q_j},\quad \frac{n-1}{n} p< \max _i q_i, \quad 0 < t < \min(q_1,\ldots,q_n,p). \] The corresponding result for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function on classical Morrey spaces was proved in [\textit{F. Chiarenza} and \textit{M. Frasca}, Rend. Mat. Appl., VII. Ser. 7, No. 3--4, 273--279 (1987; Zbl 0717.42023)]. The author also provides a version of the Fefferman-Stein inequality. Some boundedness results for fractional integrals and Calderón-Zygmund operators on mixed Morrey spaces are also proved in this paper.
