Let \( A\) be a linear, in general, unbounded operator in a Banach space \(X\) with domain \({\mathcal D} (A)\). An element \(f\in {\mathcal D}_{\infty}(A)=\bigcap_{n=0}^{\infty}{\mathcal D}(A^n)\) is called a vector of order \(\leq \zeta \), \(\zeta >0\), with respect to \(A\) if \(\|A^n f\|\leq c(f)\zeta ^n\), \(n=0,1,\dots\), with some \(c(f)>0\). Let \({\mathcal B}_{\zeta }(A)\) denote the set of all vectors of order \(\zeta \) with respect to \(A\). An element \(f\in{\mathcal D}_{\infty}(A)\) is a holomorphic vector of the operator \(A\) if the series \(e^{zA}f=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}{z^nA^nf\over n!}\) is norm convergent in a neighborhood of zero. If this series converges for all \(z\in \mathbb C\), then \(f\) is called an entire vector of \(A\). In terms of best approximation \(E_{\zeta }(f, A)=\inf \{\|f-g\|: g\in {\mathcal B}_{\zeta }(A)\}\) of the element \(f\in {\mathcal D}_{\infty}(A)\) the author obtains ( under some additional restrictions to the operator \(A\)) the necessary and sufficient conditions which characterize the holomorphic vector \(f\) of the operator \(A\). The posibility to derive a generalization of Bernstein's formula for the width of a strip i! n which a function is holomorphic, as well as some other theorems due to Bernstein, from this theorem is shown. The order and type of the entire vector function \(e^{zA}f\) in terms of the best approximation \(E_{\zeta }(f,A)\) are also calculated.
