The authors study the dependence on the characteristic of the field of the Betti numbers of the powers of a monomial ideal. In Theorem 3.3, they show that if \(I\) is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a certain vertex minimal triangulation of the Klein bottle, then both \(4\)th and \(5\)th Betti numbers of \(I^h\) are different in characteristic \(2\) and in characteristic \(0\), for every \(h\geq 1\); In Corollary 4.8, the authors show that for every prime number \(p\), there exists a monomial ideal \(I\) and an integer \(i\geq 1\) (both depending on \(p\)) such that the \(i\)th Betti number of \(I^h\) differs in characteristic \(p\) and in characteristic \(0\), for every \(h\geq 1\). In Theorem 4.11, the focus is on the dependence on the characteristic of the field of the Kodiyalam polynomials (see [\textit{V. Kodiyalam}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 118, No. 3, 757--764 (1993; Zbl 0780.13007)] and [\textit{J. Herzog} and \textit{V. Welker}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 215, No. 4, 589--596 (2011; Zbl 1202.13002)]). The authors show that for any \(i\geq 3\) and any \(r\geq 0\), there exists a monomial ideal such that, for every \(3\leq j\leq i+r\), the \(j\)th Kodiyalam polynomial has a coefficient of a term of degree \(\geq r\) that differs in characteristic \(2\) and in characteristic \(0\).
