The construction of Gauss type finite point cubature formulas for prescribed measures remains of utmost importance in applied areas of numerical analysis. The multivariate case is notorious for its inherent difficuloties. See for instance [\textit{I. P. Mysovskikh}, Sov. Math., Dokl. 9, 277--280 (1968; Zbl 0176.14404); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 178, 1252--1254 (1968)] or [\textit{S. L. Sobolev} and \textit{V. L. Vaskevich}, The theory of cubature formulas. Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers (1997; Zbl 0877.65009)]. The minimal number of nodes of a cubature, for a given degree, is called in the article under review \textit{the Caratheodory number}. The authors propose a very general scheme of estimating this order, in the context of function algebras of continuous functions defined on a locally compact Hausdorff space. In the case of real polynomial rings, the authors unify a series of classical results (see for instance [\textit{H. M. Möller}, Numer. Math. 25, 185--200 (1976; Zbl 0319.65019)]) and they touch, on an equal competitive basis, recent investigations, such as [\textit{C. Riener} and \textit{M. Schweighofer}, J. Complexity 45, 22--54 (2018; Zbl 1386.65092)]. Although a theoretical work, the present contribution of di Dio and Schmüdgen may be of interest to numerical analysts and their customers.
