The multilevel grid method, combined with the generalized pulse spectrum technique (GPST) is used to develop a history matching algorithm which is able to identify permeability distributions varying by an order of magnitude over the space domain with fairly general initial guesses (constants) deviating from the true distribution by two orders of magnitude. We show that the use of the multilevel grid method reduces the sensitive dependence of the identified permeability distributions on the initial guesses and speeds up numerical computations. The section 2 is devoted to the description of the application of the GPST algorithm to history matching three-dimensional two-phase reservoir models. Section 3 discusses the use of the multilevel grid method to improve the quality of the identified permeability distribution. Numerical results of both two- and three-dimensional reservoir models are given in Section 4, followed by the conclusions in Section 5.
